When You Wake-Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed
How-to Hit the Reset Button
The sound of my 6am alarm jolted me awake mid-deep sleep.
Followed by the feeling of dread.
Although I was exhausted yesterday, I found myself wide awake last night just in time for me to clock some sleep. This led to tossing and turning for most of the night, trying to avoid eye contact with the time on my phone, as seeing the time pass only stresses me further.
Waking up, literally, on the wrong side of the bed, my husband’s side, as he was able to graciously leap out of bed with high spirits intact when his alarm went off an hour prior. Leaving me in the sleep-dust, feeling downright uninspired for the day ahead.
“Ugh. This day does not get me going. I am not feeling it.”
{And just like that, I have set the tone for my day ahead, whether I liked it or not.}
How-to Hit the Reset Button
I used to be an “all or nothing” person.
I lacked self-compassion when I most needed it.
Example being finding myself overeating sweets during what was supposed to be a time of healthy discipline and intake. Leading me to fall off of the bandwagon and breaking a cycle that allowed me to feel my best.
For me, it was either I stuck to the plan wholeheartedly, or I wouldn’t succeed. There was no room for what I deemed to be, moments of failure.
This trickled into the beginning of a new day in its entirety: I found myself casting off a perfectly good day, if I woke up exhausted, lackluster or demotivated about what the day had in store for me.
But the truth is, you never know what a day, God or the Universe has in mind for you.
You cannot predict the future.
You do not know if this unfavorable mood will carry with you throughout the day, or if the tides will turn.
What you do know, is how you currently feel and what you can do about it.
& In most cases*, you have a choice.
You have the choice to hit the reset button at any time.
You see, I since discovered that this “all or nothing” mentality was royally screwing me over and robbing me of the miracles and joy of each brand new day.
If I chose to carry this crappy mood and tone with me, as I like to call it, the little curmudgeon in me, that it would more than happy to hold my hand and weigh me and my thought processes down, leading me to other unfavorable feelings or experiences.
What you choose to do WILL impact the decisions you make and the rest of your day.
In most cases*, everything is related, everything is one big energetic ripple effect.
{Side Note: I chose to input the phrase “in most cases*” because I want to recognize that there are personal experiences, including moments of grief, anxiety or despair, in which it doesn’t matter how hard you try, you cannot shake off those feelings. If you find that you are experiencing this, provide yourself with self-compassion, acknowledge these feelings and seek professional support in the form of a Therapist, Phycologist or Psychiatrist, whatever feels right to you. I have found personally, those light workers are there for a reason, and they typically help open doors to the light much quicker than you attempting to carry this heaviness on your own.}
Furthermore, just because you don’t feel your best, does not mean that you cannot do your best.
Repeat that statement:
Just because you don’t feel your best, does not mean that you cannot do your best.
You don’t need to crush your personal best score in Peloton to have a great ride.
You don’t need to get a 100 on an exam to do extraordinarily well.
You don’t need to have a perfect hair day to look damn good.
& You don’t need to feel your best to have a great day.
I encourage you to acknowledge that you have a choice. There is a healthy balance in life, you have the ability to reset your mindset, your intentions and your outlook at any moment EVERY DAY. That’s your God-given right, and the only person that has that choice and right is you.
Choose wisely, dear one.
